Isabella is a pretty girl, with silky black hair and stunning blue eyes – she is also a master criminal who regularly steals from her wealthy friends so that she and her father (a greedy little man with expensive taste and skin the texture of a weathered coconut) can live in London’s high society. Isabella will do whatever it takes to win over her Uncle and inherit his monstrous fortune.
Likes – everything about herself especially her silky black hair and stunning blue eyes; pancakes with large dollops of fresh honey and cream and newly picked strawberries; being fabulously rich; having an army of servants waiting on her around the clock; pretty dresses; her Uncle’s pet crocodile Thorn; and stealing from her wealthy friends (her favourite items include antique watches, rare jewels and priceless works of art).
Dislikes – her cousins Milo and Adele; servants that disobey her or take too long bringing her fresh slices of vanilla cake and hot chocolate; anyone who gets in her way as she schemes and plots to win over Uncle Silas; the elephant who trampled her mother to death; and being poor.
As boys go, Milo is one of the short ones. He cannot help this fact. The other thing you should know about Milo is that his parents (who were perfectly kind if rather dull sort of people) exploded on a volcanic eruption which thrust them over a cliff and into the ocean. It is assumed that they were eaten by sharks. This awful event turned Milo into an orphan – and a very sad one at that. Milo is a good boy at heart but he has a festering hatred for the person he holds responsible for his parent’s awful demise – Uncle Silas. As such, Milo travels to Sommerset so that he can avenge his parent’s death and sooth the rage bubbling inside of him.
Likes – the gardens at Sommerset (Milo is a skilled and creative gardener with a love of rare and unusual plants); listening to his grandfather play his violin; memories of his parents before they were gobbled up by the ocean; doing well at school; and seeking revenge against his Uncle Silas.
Dislikes – Uncle Silas; being stuck indoors on rainy days; his snooty cousin Isabella (especially when she refers to him as a poor little orphan); cold soup; and people plotting to kill him.
Adele is a most unfortunate child – she had ghastly red hair, a face full of freckles and a dangerous lunatic for a mother. On a less tragic note, Adele has a deep love of books and a very sharp mind. In fact, she is rather brilliant in the art of detection. When it comes to collecting clues and putting the pieces together, there is no child better able to unearth the many dark secrets lurking inside her Uncle Silas’ island home. Perhaps that is why he keeps such a close eye on her.
Likes – the Sommerset library; her father; her Aunt Rosemary; her cousins; and the many unsolved mysteries lurking in the halls and chambers of Sommerset House.
Dislikes - her mother; Uncle Silas; greedy people (including her mother); evil geniuses (including her Uncle Silas); red hair and unsightly freckles (mainly her own).
